Clippers, Raptors still plan to complete Kawhi Leonard trade

The possibility that the NBA’s investigation involving Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers could extend into 2027 hasn’t derailed plans to complete Leonard’s trade to the Raptors.

According to Baxter Holmes of ESPN, both franchises still intend to move forward with the blockbuster deal despite uncertainty surrounding the league’s salary cap circumvention probe.

As Hoops Wire relayed, Holmes reported the investigation could stretch well beyond this offseason if the NBA, Clippers and National Basketball Players Association fail to agree on the findings and the case proceeds to arbitration.

That possibility has created uncertainty because any discipline imposed on Leonard would carry over to Toronto once the trade is finalized.

That said, both organizations continue to operate as though the deal will eventually be completed, ESPN reported. Exactly when that happens remains unclear.

Holmes noted it’s uncertain whether a potential arbitration process would delay the trade, though NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently expressed optimism that the investigation will be resolved before the start of the regular season.

The Clippers have consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the nearly year-long investigation, which centers on allegations that Leonard received improper financial benefits tied to sponsorship agreements involving former team sponsor Aspiration.

The Raptors agreed to acquire Leonard last month, but the trade has remained on hold while the league completes its investigation and determines whether any discipline will be issued.
