Clippers, Raptors agree to complete Kawhi Leonard trade

So much for “in the coming days.” It took only a few hours.

The Clippers and Raptors have agreed to complete their long-delayed trade sending Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, ESPN reported. The teams will now schedule the required trade call with the NBA.

Under the agreed-upon terms, the Raptors will receive Leonard. The Clippers will get Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, one first-round swap and two second-rounders.

The first-round selections are reportedly Toronto’s picks in 2031 and 2033, with the Clippers also receiving swap rights in 2027. The second-round picks will come in 2030 and 2033.

The teams originally reached the agreement in late June, but Toronto paused the transaction while the NBA investigated whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap by arranging outside income opportunities for Leonard.

Leonard avoided a suspension and kept his contract intact, receiving only a $700,000 financial penalty. The Clippers were fined $30 million, stripped of five first-round picks and received lengthy suspensions for owner Steve Ballmer and other top executives.

Ballmer announced Sunday night that the Clippers would accept the penalties and abandon their threatened legal action against the league.

That apparently cleared the final obstacle, even though reports differed Monday morning over how quickly the trade might proceed.

Now we know.

After nearly three months, historic penalties, competing reports and enough delays to qualify as performance art, Kawhi Leonard is going back to Toronto.
