Star point guard Damian Lillard intends to meet with GM Joe Cronin and other Trail Blazers officials about his future with the franchise, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
The meeting is expected to take place early this week, Amick noted, as Lillard reportedly is set to return from vacation in France.
The Blazers drafted guard Scoot Henderson with the No. 3 overall pick, as well as forward Kris Murray at No. 23 and shooting guard Rayan Rupert at No. 43. Those players add to an already fairly young core.
Meanwhile, Lillard has made it clear he is hopeful to remain in Portland, though that seems contingent on the Blazers landing some veteran “win-now” players.
Per Amick, Lillard’s dream scenario would not only be for the Blazers to re-sign free agent forward Jerami Grant, but to land Warriors forward Draymond Green, also an unrestricted free agent.
Either way, a big part of the meeting is expected to center around the Blazers’ commitment to build a winning roster for next season. Per Amick, if Lillard believes that Cronin and owner Jody Allen are serious about trying to contend, he’ll hold off on a decision about his future until after free agency and perhaps until the start of training camp.
Otherwise, there is great speculation that he could request a trade, with the Heat supposedly topping his radar.
