Donovan Mitchell on James Harden: ‘Really puts into perspective how BS a lot of the narratives are’

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Donovan Mitchell has heard the narratives about James Harden.

Now that he’s actually Harden’s teammate, Mitchell sounds even less interested in them.

“I’ve always known it about him, but being his teammate, I think he brings it to a whole new level,” Mitchell said after Cavaliers practice Wednesday. “Seeing him in camp, his influence on the group, seeing his passion with the group, his passion behind intention, really puts into perspective how BS a lot of the narratives are.”

That’s a fairly strong endorsement from the Cavs’ best player, particularly when it comes to something Harden has occasionally been criticized for over the years. Namely, leadership.

But Mitchell sees something very different.

He also suggested Harden’s place in the NBA conversation would look considerably different had a championship already been attached to his résumé.

“I truly believe the only reason he’s not talked about like LeBron and KD is because of championship convos,” Mitchell said.

In other words, Mitchell doesn’t view Harden merely as another accomplished veteran added to a talented roster. He sees a player whose influence is already being felt inside the building.

That matters for a Cavs team with championship expectations and a backcourt featuring two stars who have spent much of their careers with the ball in their hands.

So far, Mitchell sounds convinced the fit extends well beyond basketball.

The Cavaliers open the preseason Thursday against the Celtics at 7 p.m. at Rocket Arena.
