The writing may be on the wall in Milwaukee. More specifically, Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks very well could part ways this summer, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.
The two sides, simply put, are no longer on the same page.
Amick pointed to the Bucks’ handling of Antetokounmpo’s knee injury as a telling development. The belief is Giannis feels ready to play. The team has kept him sidelined.
That gap says plenty about where things stand.
As Amick wrote, Milwaukee’s approach could be about protecting Antetokounmpo’s health for a potential trade. It could also be tied to draft positioning. Either way, it runs counter to what the player wants.
And that’s usually how this stuff goes.
The Bucks have been stuck early in the playoffs, losing in the first round three straight years. They’ve won just one series since the 2021 title run over the Suns.
Antetokounmpo has been the face of it all. Two MVPs. A Finals MVP. A Defensive Player of the Year. Ten All-Star nods. A championship that changed everything in Milwaukee.
Now comes the next decision.
He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on October one. If he doesn’t sign it, co-owner Wes Edens told ESPN the outcome is straightforward: Extension or trade.
There’s also the personal side. Per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, Antetokounmpo has shown a preference for the East Coast, which offers easier access to Greece for his family.
If it gets to that point, there will be no shortage of interest.
The Heat. The Knicks. The 76ers. And likely plenty more, including the Lakers, Warriors, Rockets and Timberwolves.
Antetokounmpo, 31, holds career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
