The Atlanta Hawks have officially acquired forward David Roddy from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for forward E.J. Liddell, as first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
For the Suns, the move is viewed as a cost-cutting deal after the signing of point guard Tyus Jones, which is also now official. The Suns aren’t expected to keep Liddell.
Liddell has a $2.1 million contract and a team option for $2.3 million for 2025-26. Roddy has a $2.8 million salary and a $4.8 million team option for the following season. The Hawks have until October 31 to exercise the option on Roddy.
Liddell was acquired by the Hawks as part of the trade involving guard Dejounte Murray with the New Orleans Pelicans. Per Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta views Roddy as a better fit.
Roddy, 23, is 6-foot-5 and plays the power forward position. He was acquired by the Suns with the Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets. He appeared in 17 games with Phoenix, and 48 overall, averaging 6.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists, shooting 40.3% from the field. This will be his third NBA season overall.
Liddell, 23, is 6-7 and missed his entire rookie season following a major knee injury. He appeared in just eight games with the Pelicans last season — though had a nice run with the Birmingham Squadron of the G League, averaging 17.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks.
The Hawks also have Jalen Johnson and Larry Nance Jr. at power forward for the time being, meaning Roddy will likely again have to battle for minutes.
