Hawks unlikely to trade for Mavericks’ Anthony Davis ahead of deadline

A midseason swing for Anthony Davis doesn’t appear to be in the cards for the Hawks right now.

NBA sources tell Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal that Atlanta is not viewed as an imminent trade suitor for the Mavericks star, barring a significant shift in its willingness to include more value in a deal. As things stand, the Hawks’ approach is described as measured.

Davis is earning $54.1 million this season and remains productive, averaging 20.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 19 starts. He has recorded 12 double-doubles and is eligible for a contract extension in August.

Atlanta’s hesitation centers on assets. Sources tell Afseth that the Hawks have little interest in parting with rookie forward Zaccharie Risacher or the valuable 2026 first-round pick swap that could convey the New Orleans Pelicans’ selection.

Those pieces are viewed as foundational as the franchise continues to build around Jalen Johnson.

Trading Trae Young earlier than expected did improve Atlanta’s financial flexibility, but acquiring a star before the February 5 deadline would also cut into the cap room the team could leverage once it knows where it will be picking in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Around the league, agents and teams are already working ahead, and there is motivation from Davis’ camp to secure clarity on a possible extension. According to Afseth’s sources, Dallas is not currently in position to provide that assurance.

The Mavericks would prefer to see Davis play alongside Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, though Irving’s return timeline following ACL surgery remains uncertain.

Dallas has explored the trade market for Davis, Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson, and D’Angelo Russell, per Afseth, as the franchise continues to evaluate its direction following the dismissal of former general manager Nico Harrison.
