The Hornets could use another guard, but that doesn’t mean they need to start giving away draft picks to find one.
That’s the case made by Sports Illustrated’s Mark Livingston, who outlined four possible additions to a backcourt dealing with uncertainty around Kon Knueppel and recent offensive struggles from Dennis Schroder.
These are Livingston’s suggestions, rather than reported Hornets targets. But the idea makes sense. Charlotte could use someone who helps keep the offense organized when Coby White and Schroder need a break.
Livingston identified Gabe Vincent and Killian Hayes as free-agent possibilities.
Vincent would offer experience, including a significant role in the Heat’s 2023 Finals run. The Hornets wouldn’t need him to recreate that postseason. They’d need dependable reserve minutes and another veteran comfortable handling the ball.
Hayes would be more of a bet on his playmaking. The former No. 7 overall pick has experience running an offense, though his scoring limitations would be a consideration for a team already looking for offensive help.
On the trade front, Livingston suggested Jordan McLaughlin and Jose Alvarado.
McLaughlin has appeared in just three games for the Spurs this season and is accustomed to a reserve role. Alvarado would bring defensive pressure, but acquiring him would depend on the Knicks’ willingness to deal and their asking price.
That’s where the Hornets would need to be careful. Adding depth is reasonable. Spending meaningful assets on a backup who doesn’t substantially improve the team is a harder sell.
Jeff Peterson has options to consider. The sensible starting point would be figuring out how much help Charlotte needs, then seeing whether a free agent can provide it.
