‘Inside the NBA’ finally getting room to breathe during Knicks-Cavs series

Good news for fans of Inside the NBA.

The gloves are apparently coming off a little.

According to Front Office Sports, the popular studio show featuring Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith will essentially be allowed to run as long as TNT producers want during the Eastern Conference finals between the Knicks and Cavaliers.

That’s notable because fans have spent much of the season complaining that the ESPN version of Inside the NBA feels shorter and more restricted than the old TNT version.

Now, at least for this series, it sounds like the crew will finally have room to do what made the show famous in the first place: talk, joke, argue and wander gloriously off-script for however long they want.

Per the report, ESPN has scheduled a one-hour postgame window following each Eastern Conference finals game, but TNT producers can extend the show at their discretion.

Translation: If Barkley gets rolling at 1 a.m., nobody may be stopping him.

There’s more.

The crew will also receive hour-long pregame shows throughout the series, with the exception of Game 3 on ABC. That game will reportedly feature the first 30 minutes of Inside airing directly on ABC before shifting to ESPN.

Meanwhile, Draymond Green is expected to make a pair of guest appearances during the series as well.

Even though ESPN now licenses the show, TNT still maintains full creative control under the agreement reached after TNT lost NBA broadcast rights in 2024.

ESPN has repeatedly emphasized that the show’s runtime decisions remain in TNT’s hands, not theirs.

One more interesting wrinkle: The Eastern Conference finals will mark the final time the crew broadcasts from Atlanta this postseason.

For the NBA Finals, the entire cast will reportedly travel together and work the championship series on site for the first time.

Which honestly feels right.
