Jalen Duren, Pistons agree to five-year, $200 million contract

All that Jalen Duren drama has finally reached its conclusion.

Duren has agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract to remain with the Pistons, his agent, Chafie Fields of THE•TEAM, told ESPN on Wednesday night.

The agreement ends a lengthy restricted free agency standoff that spilled into training camp. Duren skipped media day and had not been practicing with the Pistons while the sides continued negotiations.

Detroit had maintained throughout the process that it wanted Duren back, with president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon repeatedly indicating the 22-year-old center remained a major part of the franchise’s plans.

Duren had until Thursday to accept his one-year qualifying offer worth roughly $9.6 million, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent next summer. Instead, he’ll take the security. Quite a bit of it.

The deal also removes what had become the Pistons’ biggest distraction entering the season.

Duren was an All-Star last season and helped Detroit win 60 games and earn the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Now he’s back, and apparently everyone can stop asking about it.
