Star guard James Harden told NBA investigators that 76ers head of basketball operations Daryl Morey promised to trade him quickly after Harden picked up his $35.6 million player option after the season, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Harden, of course, remains a member of the 76ers and recently referred to Morey as a “liar” during an Adidas event in China. The league began an investigation shortly thereafter.
As Charania and other outlets reported, the Sixers are now expecting to hang on to Harden at least into training camp as they have yet to find a deal to their liking. Harden reportedly has been angling for a trade to the Clippers, though it appears he may be open to other destinations.
For the time being, though, he does not appear open to playing for the Sixers. That said, he is still under contract with the team and very well could lose money if he doesn’t report. Under the new CBA, he would also be ineligible for free agency in 2024.
“I’ve been patient all summer,” Harden recently told Jason Bristol of KHOU-TV, implying he is waiting for his trade request to be met. “For me, it’s just focus on what I can control and that’s working out, staying in shape and getting ready for the season.”
When asked if the relationship between Harden and the Sixers was repairable, Harden was again direct.
“I don’t think so,” he said.
As part of NBA probe into his “liar” comment, James Harden told league investigators he was referring to Daryl Morey telling Harden he will trade him “quickly” following the $35.6 million opt in for 2023-24, per sources. The 76ers’ stance now is they expect to keep Harden.
