Jeanie Buss’ court fight over Lakers ownership sale delayed until December

The Buss family’s fight over its remaining ownership stake in the Lakers will have to wait a little longer.

A court hearing stemming from Jeanie Buss’ attempt to prevent five of her siblings from selling the family’s remaining 17.8% stake in the franchise has been postponed from Nov. 5 until Dec. 8, according to Khobi Price of the California Post.

The reason is considerably less dramatic than the dispute itself.

Buss’ lead attorney, Adam Streisand, requested the delay because he’ll be in Europe for two speaking engagements and isn’t scheduled to return to Los Angeles until Nov. 18. The request was granted.

Jeanie filed a 97-page petition in Los Angeles Superior Court last week seeking to block siblings Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss from selling the family’s stake.

And this isn’t exactly a friendly disagreement.

Jeanie accused her siblings of “scheming and manipulations” and called their actions “devious,” maintaining that she never approved the proposed sale and wasn’t even informed about it beforehand.

She is asking the court for several forms of relief, including declaring the trustees’ resolution authorizing the sale void and removing Joey and Janie Buss as co-trustees.

At stake for Jeanie is more than money. Selling the family’s remaining interest could prevent her from maintaining the ownership position required to remain Lakers governor, a role she has held since the death of her father, Jerry Buss, in 2013.

So the Buss family showdown is still coming. Just apparently not until December.
