John Konchar drawing interest from Heat, Magic, Raptors, Knicks

John Konchar has drawn interest from four Eastern Conference teams. Now one of them has to find the money and roster space to sign him.

The Heat, Magic and Raptors have joined the Knicks in monitoring Konchar, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Konchar, 29, spent most of his seven NBA seasons with Memphis before being moved twice this offseason. Utah sent him and Cody Williams to Minnesota last month, and the Timberwolves subsequently waived him.

He has never averaged more than 5.1 points, but scoring isn’t why teams are calling. The 6-foot-5 wing rebounds well, moves the ball, defends multiple positions and has made 34.9 percent of his career 3-pointers. In other words, he can fill several small roles without demanding a large one.

The complications are largely financial. All four interested teams are above the luxury-tax line. Toronto doesn’t currently have enough room below its first-apron hard cap to offer a minimum contract.

Miami and Orlando each have 14 players on standard deals but aren’t required to carry a 15th. New York has 13 standard contracts and is believed to be prioritizing another big man.

Konchar can afford to wait. His entire $6.17 million salary for this season remains guaranteed and will be paid by Minnesota.

Preseason injuries or disappointing performances could create a clearer opportunity elsewhere.
