Russell Westbrook‘s retirement apparently made Kevin Durant think. Just not about retiring himself.
Durant is preparing for his 20th NBA season and said on Boardroom Talks that while Westbrook’s decision to walk away affected him, he’s not spending much time contemplating the end of his own career.
“It’s a young man’s game,” Durant said. “Even though I feel like I can play, you always hear, ‘You’re 38, you’re 39. You’re getting up there.’”
He is indeed 38, but there hasn’t been much evidence that he needs to start filling out retirement paperwork.
The Rockets star averaged 26 points last season and earned second-team All-NBA honors. He also holds a $46 million player option for 2027-28.
In other words, there could still be plenty of basketball ahead.
“I put everything into the game and I’m cool with whatever happens as I move forward,” Durant said. “I’m going to continue to put everything into the game until I can’t no more.”
Durant and Westbrook entered the NBA one year apart and spent eight seasons together in Oklahoma City. Westbrook’s retirement served as another reminder that their generation is nearing the finish line.
Durant just doesn’t sound particularly interested in finding it yet.
