Kings expected to shop Domantas Sabonis and other veterans this offseason

The Kings are heading for a reset, and Domantas Sabonis could be the centerpiece of it.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Sacramento is expected to explore trading veteran players this offseason to clear cap space. Sabonis figures to draw the most interest out of a group that also includes Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Malik Monk.

Teams looking for an experienced center option are expected to call. That makes sense given what Sabonis brings when healthy. The issue is the contract and the injury history.

Sabonis is owed $45.5 million in 2026-27 and $48.6 million in 2027-28. That’s a significant commitment for a 30-year-old big man coming off the worst season of his career as a starter. He appeared in just 19 games last season due to various injuries, averaging 15.8 points per game.

The Raptors looked into acquiring Sabonis this past season, but talks stalled over the need to include Jakob Poeltl in Toronto’s outgoing package. Whether that interest resurfaces remains to be seen.

Sacramento has some decisions to make. The roster as currently constructed has not worked. Moving Sabonis and some of the other veterans would give the Kings flexibility to rebuild around a younger core.

The market will determine how much they can get back. But one way or another, this group appears to be breaking up.
