Former NBA center DeSagana Diop has been hired as coach of the Westchester Knicks, New York’s affiliate in the G League, as relayed by Marc Berman of the New York Post.DeSagana Diop

Diop, 40, has served as an assistant coach with the Rockets and Jazz, as well as with the G League’s Texas Legends. He will replace Derrick Alston in Westchester.

As Berman noted, Diop is a former client of Knicks president Leon Rose, a one-time CAA agent. “Diop is the cousin of Knicks personnel director Makhtar N’Diaye, who was the first player from Senegal to play in the NBA,” Berman wrote.

As a player, he was selected by the Cavs with the No. 8 pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. After four seasons in Cleveland, he spent time with the Mavericks, Nets and Bobcats before retiring in 2013.

Following the departure of Diop, Rockets coach Stephen Silas will be looking to replace three former assistants.
