The Knicks have filled two of their three open two-way spots, signing Kevin McCullar Jr. and rookie Tyler Nickel, the team announced Sunday.
McCullar is back for a third season on a two-way deal. The 25-year-old wing appeared in 21 NBA games last season, averaging 2.4 points in 7.4 minutes. He had a larger role with the G League’s Westchester Knicks, averaging 16.8 points, 6.2 assists and 5.4 rebounds in 14 games.
Nickel, the No. 47 pick in June’s draft, gets his first NBA contract. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 13.5 points as a senior at Vanderbilt and shot 40 percent from three on 7.6 attempts per game.
That shooting gives New York something to work with. Nickel was also reportedly considering a return to college after a federal court ruling raised the possibility of another season of eligibility. He has chosen to begin his pro career instead.
Two-way contracts let the Knicks develop both wings with Westchester while keeping them available to the NBA club. New York still has one two-way spot open heading into training camp.
