Lakers hire Bob Iger’s son for G League broadcasts

The Lakers’ ownership deal isn’t finished. Another Iger connection to the franchise already is.

Will Iger, the son of prospective Lakers investor Bob Iger, has been named the play-by-play announcer for the Coachella Valley Lakers, the organization’s G League affiliate. He’ll work alongside former Lakers forward A.C. Green during the 2026-27 season.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin highlighted the announcement Thursday, with the elder Iger involved in the group seeking to acquire the Lakers from Mark Walter.

The timing is certainly noticeable. Whether the two developments are connected hasn’t been established.

Will Iger does have broadcasting experience. As Alder Almo of Heavy details, he previously called games for the Austin Spurs and worked on the Mavericks’ weekly studio show, “The Bounce.” His résumé also includes San Antonio FC and college broadcasting assignments involving Columbia and Hofstra.

So this isn’t someone arriving at a microphone with no relevant background. He has done this work, including at the G League level.

Still, when your father is involved in buying the parent franchise, a new job with its affiliate is going to draw attention beyond the usual broadcast announcement. The experience deserves acknowledgment. So does the family connection.

Bob Iger is partnering with Josh Kushner in the proposed transaction, which values the Lakers at $12.5 billion. As previously reported, Iger isn’t expected to be the controlling owner.

The deal still requires final documentation and NBA approval. There has been no indication from the Lakers that the broadcast hire was tied to the ownership negotiations.

Meanwhile, the affiliate has its own transition underway. Formerly the South Bay Lakers, the team has relocated to the Coachella Valley and opens its season Friday against the Salt Lake City Stars at Acrisure Arena.

Will Iger will get to establish himself through the broadcasts. His last name will ensure a few more people are paying attention.
