It’s official. LeBron James and Bronny James are the first father-son teammates in NBA history. That much you already knew, as the pair checked in the game together in the second quarter of the Lakers’ 110-103 opening home win over the Timberwolves.
LeBron’s first pass to Bronny was a flip to his kid, who came off a screen. Later, LeBron threw Bronny a pass for a 3-pointer. It looked good … but missed.
Overall, it was a historic night. Bronny got three second-quarter minutes, missing both of his shots.
“That moment, us being at the scorer’s table together and checking in together, something I will never forget,” LeBron said in a joint postgame news conference with Bronny, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “No matter how old I get, no matter how my memory may fade as I get older or whatever, I will never forget that moment.”
Regardless of how you feel about Bronny as an NBA player, the truth is, he’s like most No. 55 overall draft picks. He’s a project. But he’s also the son of a legend and a basketball celebrity.
The Lakers have said they won’t play Bronny at the expense of winning. But LeBron has done enough for the league and the organization that he deserved this moment. That’s just the truth. Never forget, the NBA is a business first.
As for Bronny, it appears he appreciated the moment as well.
“I tried not to focus on everything that was going on around me and tried to focus on going in as a rookie and not trying to mess up,” Bronny said. “But yeah, I totally did feel the energy, and I appreciate the Laker Nation for showing the support for me and my dad.”
LeBron finished with 16 points and, as usual, played a big role in orchestrating the offense and working as a setup man. Anthony Davis was amazing to the tune of 36 points, 16 rebounds and three big blocks.
