LeBron James, ESPN nearing deal for ‘Last Dance’-style documentary

LeBron James‘ final NBA seasons may soon receive the documentary treatment.

According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, James and ESPN are closing in on an agreement for a behind-the-scenes series chronicling the final chapter of the four-time MVP’s career.

Sources told Marchand the talks are at the “one-yard line,” though nothing has been finalized.

The project would follow James during what is expected to be his final seasons with the 76ers while also drawing from years of previously filmed footage that has never been publicly released.

The report adds another layer to recent comments from NBA insider Marc Stein, who wrote that longtime NBA Entertainment producer Andy Thompson has been documenting James for several years.

Thompson also served as the principal videographer on ESPN’s acclaimed The Last Dance documentary about Michael Jordan and the Bulls. In fact, there were signs years ago that something like this was already in the works.

Back in 2023, Lakers radio broadcaster John Ireland told Awful Announcing that Thompson had been spending extensive time around James, stockpiling footage with the possibility of eventually telling the story of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

“Andy is stockpiling that just so he has it and has the opportunity to tell the story,” Ireland said at the time.

James recently called his decision to sign with Philadelphia the final move of his NBA career. If the reported deal with ESPN is completed, fans may get an unprecedented look at how that final chapter unfolds.
