The Cavaliers and others continue to be linked to LeBron James. That doesn’t mean he’s leaving the Lakers.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the focus remains on the Lakers as James and Los Angeles continue discussing what could be his return for a record-setting 24th NBA season.

“I think LeBron’s intention is to play,” Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland. “And I think the focus right now is making a deal with the Lakers.”
James becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer and is eligible to negotiate exclusively with the Lakers before the start of free agency at the end of the month.
Windhorst indicated the two sides are already engaged in discussions.
“Right now, he’s allowed to negotiate with the Lakers, and I believe they are negotiating,” Windhorst said. “I believe they’re going back and forth.”
The biggest issue may come down to money.
The size of James’ next contract could depend on what the Lakers hope to accomplish elsewhere in free agency and how much salary-cap flexibility they need to improve the roster around Luka Doncic and, presumably, Austin Reaves.
As we’ve relayed, many around the NBA believe LeBron is headed back to LA. But Windhorst did leave the door open for other possibilities.
“If in 14 days he is at an impasse with the Lakers and there is no deal there, then I think other teams, like the Cavs, should stand to attention,” he said.
Nevertheless, while the Cavs and others may be lurking, it appears the Lakers are leading.
