LeBron James is getting to the 76ers’ practice facility early. About three hours early, in fact.
James arrives around 7:45 a.m. to work with longtime trainer Mike Mancias before Philadelphia’s team practice, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Their routine includes stretching, activation work and special attention to James’ left foot, which has chronic arthritis, and his lower back. Sciatica in his back cost him the first month of last season.
VJ Edgecombe noticed who was already there when he first walked into the locker room.
“He was in there before everybody,” Edgecombe told ESPN. “As usual.”
James is 41 and preparing for his 24th NBA season. He also commutes from New York by helicopter, which makes a 7:45 arrival a fairly impressive bit of scheduling.
The foot and back issues aren’t new, but managing them is part of the job for the Sixers as they bring James together with Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey. There will be plenty of discussion about minutes and back-to-backs as the season approaches.
James has been through enough seasons to know what his body requires. Philadelphia is getting a close look at the work that goes into having him on the court.
