Lonnie Walker IV’s NBA journey has hit a pause, but it’s far from over. The former Spurs, Lakers, and Nets guard didn’t make the cut on the Maine Celtics’ initial training camp roster after being waived by Boston from his Exhibit 10 deal, as relayed by RealGM.
While some might see this as a setback, Walker himself has been vocal about his willingness to grind it out in the G League if it means another shot at the NBA.
Now, it’s not that Maine’s door is closed; far from it. Walker can still join the G League squad at any time, but he seems to be weighing his options before jumping in. And there are options. Word from last week is that Real Madrid is interested, and a European move could put Walker in front of a huge international audience while still keeping him in play for an NBA return.
With six seasons under his belt and a reputation as a capable scorer and defender, Walker isn’t out of the league’s picture just yet. It’s not unusual for vets like him to go this route. A quick stint in the G League — or a showcase season overseas — could be just the boost his career needs.
So, for now, Walker’s next move remains a bit of a mystery. Whether he laces up for Maine or heads overseas to suit up for Real Madrid, Walker’s drive to get back to the NBA is clear.
Walker, 25, is 6-foot-4 appeared in 58 games with the Nets last season and averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, shooting 38.4% on 3-pointers.
Before the season, he was among several veteran free agents who worked out for the Sacramento Kings.
