Mavs Star Luka Doncic on Goran Dragic: ‘He’s My Guy’

All-Star guard/forward Luka Doncic hasn’t yet made a push for the Mavericks to sign veteran point guard Goran Dragic, but that may not be far off.Goran Dragic Luka Doncic

“He’s my guy,” Doncic told reporters. “Everybody would want their guys on their team. So we’ll see.”

Dragic was recently waived by the Spurs following a trade with the Raptors at the deadline. He has drawn interest from multiple contenders, including the Lakers and Bucks.

Both Doncic and Dragic are natives of Slovenia, and Doncic’s father was Dragic’s mentor when Doncic and Dragic played together for the Slovenian national team. Doncic has known Dragic since Doncic was 5-years old.

“Before this season started, when Dragic was still a member of the Toronto Raptors, Doncic talked with Mavs front office leaders about adding the veteran point guard,” RealGM wrote. “Following the trade deadline, Dallas GM Nico Harrison that he had no further roster moves planned. Despite that, Doncic hasn’t given up hope that he may still team up with Dragic.”

Dragic, 35, has appeared in just five games this season. He was away from the Raptors at the time of the trade to the Spurs for personal reasons. Mostly, it was because both Dragic and the Raptors were seeking a trade.

Could he team up with Doncic? It seems about 50-50 at this point. But if it happens, you can bet Doncic will be a big reason why.
