Michigan’s Dusty May drawing NBA interest

Dusty May just delivered a national championship to Michigan. Now comes the inevitable NBA speculation.

According to Front Office Sports, May has emerged as a potential candidate for multiple NBA openings, including the Magic and possibly the Warriors if Steve Kerr decides not to return next season.

There is already believed to be mutual interest between May and Orlando, per Front Office Sports, with league sources reiterating that connection this week.

It’s easy to understand why.

May has gone 64-13 in two seasons at Michigan and quickly established himself as one of the top coaches in college basketball. He has also thrived in the transfer portal and NIL era, helping turn the Wolverines into a powerhouse again.

The interesting wrinkle is that May still has not finalized his latest contract extension with Michigan.

Athletic director Warde Manuel announced a new deal after the Wolverines won the national title, but May recently acknowledged the agreement has not yet been signed.

“I haven’t signed,” May said on April 29. “Warde and I agreed to the terms and the structure, and then after that, there’s still some I’s to dot and T’s to cross.”

That has naturally fueled more speculation about whether May could at least listen if the NBA comes calling.

Michigan remains one of college basketball’s premier jobs, especially in today’s landscape. Still, opportunities at the NBA level do not come around often.

And right now, May’s stock may be as high as anyone’s in the sport.
