Mike D’Antoni, Terry Stotts May Be Kings Coaching Targets

Former Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni and ex-Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts may be among the Kings’ targets should they opt not to keep interim man Alvin Gentry, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.Mike D'Antoni

There’s growing speculation that the Kings will move on from Gentry at the end of the season, Stein added. Gentry got the job after the team fired Luke Walton in the first half of the season.

Others the Kings may consider include former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown and former Hornets and Magic coach Steve Clifford, per Stein.

Along with coaching the Rockets, D’Antoni has coached the Lakers, Knicks, Suns and Nuggets. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is said to be a fan of D’Antoni’s wide-open approach to offense. While his teams haven’t won titles, they are generally in contention and play a fun style that features lots of fast breaks and 3-pointers.

“We’ll see [about next season]. I’m not ruling it out,” D’Antoni said recently. “Too young [at 70 years old] to rule anything out.”

D’Antoni has compiled a 627-572 record in 16 seasons overall. Over the past several seasons, he reportedly has been in the running for former openings with the Pacers, 76ers and Trail Blazers.

Stotts, 63, began coaching the Blazers in 2012 and owns a 402-318 record in Portland. He has also served as head coach of the Bucks and Hawks, and carries a 517-486 record in 13 seasons overall. The Blazers made the playoffs eight straight years under Stotts.
