Cavaliers
The Cavaliers’ second-round pick may have been one of the biggest surprises of Summer League.
Meleek Thomas led all players in Las Vegas by averaging 27.3 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc on eight attempts per game. He also finished with a 15-to-6 assist-to-turnover ratio and recorded eight steals in four games.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, one NBA scout believes Thomas’ scoring ability is very real.
“To say he’s got a scorer’s mentality is an understatement,” the scout said. “The guy has his eye on the rim from the scorer’s table.”
The scout acknowledged Thomas’ unconventional shot and questioned whether he’ll be able to play the same ultra-aggressive style against NBA competition. Even so, he called the young guard’s scoring talent “undeniable.”
For a Cavs team always looking for additional shot creation, that’s certainly an encouraging assessment.
Spurs
The Spurs aren’t ready to move on from David Jones Garcia.
San Antonio officially re-signed the guard/forward to a two-way contract after he spent last season with the organization.
Jones Garcia appeared in only 11 NBA games, but he was one of the G League’s most productive players, averaging 26.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Austin Spurs before his season ended because of ankle surgery.
To create room for Jones Garcia, the Spurs waived two-way player Emanuel Miller.
Pelicans
The Pelicans are giving Jaron Pierre Jr. a chance to continue his development.
According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, New Orleans has agreed to a two-way contract with the undrafted guard after he appeared in three Summer League games for the club.
Pierre capped his college career at SMU after previously starring at Jacksonville State, where he earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors.
He averaged 10 points in Summer League despite struggling with his shooting efficiency.
The signing fills another of New Orleans’ two-way spots, with center Hunter Dickson holding the other. So, they still have one available.
