NBA execs question lottery ‘floor’ in new proposal

The NBA may have a new lottery system on the table.

That doesn’t mean everyone is sold on the details.

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, some league executives have already raised concerns about one key part of the proposed “3-2-1” format. Specifically, how far the league’s worst teams should be allowed to fall in the draft.

Right now, the idea is to penalize the bottom three teams by giving them worse lottery odds. But there’s still debate over the “floor” — essentially, how low those teams could realistically drop.

On a recent call with league officials, some executives argued that the floor for those bottom-three teams shouldn’t fall beyond the No. 10 pick.

Others? They think even that might be too generous.

In other words, even among teams that support cracking down on tanking, there’s still some disagreement on how far to push it.

That’s not surprising.

The league is trying to thread a needle here. Discourage losing without completely stripping struggling teams of a path back.

There’s still time for tweaks before any formal vote. And based on early feedback, there may have to be.

Because while the message from Adam Silver has been clear — losing shouldn’t feel comfortable — figuring out exactly how uncomfortable it should be is where things get tricky.
