NBA finalizing plans for two-day draft; increase time for second-round picks

The NBA is finalizing plans to move the draft to a two-day event, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.Adam Silver

This has been in the works for some time and was initially relayed by commissioner Adam Silver back in November. If it happens (and it highly likely will), the format will be instituted as soon as the 2024 NBA Draft, Wojnarowski added.

The NBA Draft has always been held on the same day, dating back to the days when it consisted of 10 rounds. Why the league wants to change it now is anyone’s guess.

One reason could be to give teams more than the rushed window of two minutes to make a second-round selection. It will likely increase that second-round-make-a-pick window to five minutes, the same as the first round, league sources told Hoops Wire. There are no plans to offer more time between first-round picks, sources said.

General managers would also like more time to contemplate trades, and few things in the NBA are on the move more than second-round picks.

Silver and the league are merely awaiting approval from the players’ association, and there’s no reason for the players to care or void a two-day draft, So expect it to happen.
