NBA free agents who sign after Tuesday face different trade rules

Tuesday represents a small but potentially important dividing line for NBA free agents who remain unsigned.

As Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors explained, a newly signed free agent generally can’t be traded until Dec. 15 or until three months after signing, whichever comes later.

That means players who sign through Tuesday, Sept. 15, can become trade-eligible on Dec. 15. Anyone signing after that will have their own eligibility date.

So, for example, a player signing Sept. 22 couldn’t be traded until Dec. 22. Someone signing Oct. 4 would have to wait until Jan. 4.

Hoops Rumors counts at least 88 players currently on track to become trade-eligible Dec. 15, though some players fall under separate rules that keep them from being dealt until Jan. 15.

For most players, a week or two probably won’t matter. The NBA trade deadline isn’t until Feb. 11, and most deals tend to arrive closer to that date anyway.

But there are wrinkles. As Adams noted, players traded after Dec. 16 can’t have their salaries aggregated with another player in a separate deal before the deadline, potentially limiting flexibility for teams making moves this winter.

There’s also one more date worth remembering: Nov. 11. Any free agent who signs Nov. 12 or later won’t reach the three-month threshold before the Feb. 11 deadline, meaning he won’t be eligible to be traded at all during the 2026-27 season.

In other words, the calendar is now part of the equation for the NBA’s remaining free agents.
