NBA Media Notes: The Athletic, Katz, Edwards, Haynes, Crawford

New York Knicks beat writer Fred Katz of The Athletic will now be known as NBA Senior Writer at The Athletic, Katz revealed on social media.NBA ball, media

James Edwards III, the Detroit Pistons beat writer at the outlet, will take over for Katz as the Knicks writer. Katz announced that he will continue his podcast and Edwards will join him.

“If you enjoyed my Knicks coverage at The Athletic and you would like to keep consuming it, YOU CAN! My podcast, Katz and Shoot, will continue in the same format: Two episodes a week talking all things Knicks,” Katz wrote.

“… As for my writing, I am still based in New York and, in case you hadn’t heard, the Knicks are quite relevant in the NBA landscape these days, so I’ll still be at lots of games and will be diving back in to write about the Knicks a good amount this season and beyond.”

Edwards also announced his move.

“This was a tough decision for me,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Michigan is my home, Detroit is an amazing place and the Pistons have been a first-class organization when it comes to media. This fan base is as passionate as any in sports.”

A replacement for Edwards on the Pistons beat at The Athletic has not been determined.

More Media

  • In case you missed it, noted NBA insider and TNT sideline reporter Chris Haynes is leaving the network after five years. His latest post on X — on Earl Watson joining the University of San Diego’s coaching staff — does not include any outlet. Haynes once wrote for my first website, Pro Basketball News, back in 2008.
  • Former NBA guard Jamal Crawford is also leaving TNT, as the NBA is moving its games to NBC and Amazon Prime as part of its new media rights package. TNT is suing to keep some of the games, but reports suggest that suit will go nowhere.
