To describe the Hornets’ 2024 season as “long” or “disastrous” would be an understatement. For the third consecutive year, Charlotte has been mired by injuries, finding itself yet again in a familiar spot — hovering near the top of the NBA draft lottery.
Recent weeks have only amplified the team’s struggles. The Hornets have been routinely blown out in games, including setting an NBA record for the worst point differential over a three-game span.
While Charlotte had been competitive earlier in the season, those moments of competitiveness have grown scarce.
Following the Hornets’ 127-105 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, center Mark Williams was blunt when discussing the team’s struggles with consistency and its tendency to let games slip away.
We're headed down the stretch of the regular season! #LetEmKnow
"You can't go by with what happened in the regular season other than to say we're feeling really good and feel we have momentum going into the playoffs"

“I think everybody could feel when that’s starting to happen,” Williams told reporters. “We just got to make sure we keep that energy up. I think when those lapses happen, the game’s still close and I think we have times we feel like we’re down more than we really are.
“We just got to do a better job of staying solid the whole time instead of falling back into, ‘Oh, this is what happened last time.’ It’s just a matter of figuring that out.”
The Hornets have now dropped eight consecutive games, seven of which have been by double-digit margins.
With just a handful of games left in the regular season, Charlotte has little left to play for but pride — and perhaps the hope of gaining some momentum heading into the offseason. Based on the team’s performance since the All-Star break, however, it’s hard to see how they can salvage anything positive down the stretch.
And the bad news is the Hornets get the Cavaliers (52-10) next. The same Cavs who have 12 straight. Tipoff is 7 pm EST Friday in Charlotte. Oh boy.
