The Utah Jazz have reached an agreement with free agent guard Jaden Springer on a 10-day contract, agent Chad Speck tells NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.
Springer, 22, was drafted 28th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2021 NBA Draft. After spending the first two-and-a-half seasons of his career in Philadelphia, he was traded to the Boston Celtics at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for a second-round pick.
He won a championship with Boston but was traded to the Houston Rockets earlier this month as part of a salary-dump deal. The Rockets subsequently waived him.
Despite his championship success, Springer has struggled to establish himself as a regular rotation player. Over his 93 career appearances (four starts) between the Sixers and Celtics, he has averaged just 2.7 points and 1.3 rebounds in 8.0 minutes per game.
However, the 6-foot-4 guard is known for his defensive prowess, particularly as a point-of-attack defender, which could make him an intriguing option for the Jazz as they look to evaluate young talent on a team currently headed toward a lottery pick.
The Jazz have 14 players on standard contracts after waiving Josh Richardson following the trade deadline, meaning they won’t need to make any additional roster moves to accommodate Springer.
The 10-day deal will see Springer earn $124,288, with the Jazz taking on a cap hit of $119,972. The contract will cover the team’s next five games, assuming it is finalized by midweek.
