NBA Notes: Raptors, Kawhi Leonard, Mavericks, Zaccharie Risacher, Rockets

Raptors

The Raptors didn’t bring back Kawhi Leonard expecting perfect attendance. Still, having to adjust without him before October ends probably wasn’t the preferred introduction.

Leonard is expected to miss weeks with swelling in his left knee, though imaging revealed no structural damage. As Sean Keane of Yardbarker writes, Toronto accepted the availability concerns when it made the trade.

The Raptors have options in Ja’Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles, rookie Allen Graves and Kyle Anderson alongside Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett. That depth now gets an early test.

Toronto has successfully managed a season around Leonard’s health before. The 2019 championship explains the appeal of trying again, but it doesn’t make the waiting any easier.

Mavericks

Zaccharie Risacher’s shot isn’t doing much campaigning for his contract option. His defense is making a considerably stronger argument.

The Mavericks have until Monday to exercise his $17.4 million option for 2027-28, according to Christian Clark of The Athletic.

Risacher has shot just 30.8% overall and 17.6% from three through four games. He has also collected eight steals and eight blocks.

“Zac is finding himself now,” coach Dusty May said. “He’s still so young. We really, really value and appreciate those plays.”

Picking up the option would guarantee next season’s salary. Declining it would send the former No. 1 pick toward unrestricted free agency next summer.

Dallas needs the offense to develop. Risacher is showing he can contribute while it does.

Rockets

Alperen Sengun’s back issue could cost him more than Wednesday’s game at Milwaukee, but the Rockets are hopeful the absence will be brief.

“After (Monday’s) game, got a little imaging done and saw a mild strain,” coach Ime Udoka said on SportsTalk 790.

“Hopefully it’s short-term, a few games at most. Looking forward to having him back quickly.”

That’s the hope, rather than a firm return date. Houston will have to replace some scoring and playmaking in the middle until Sengun is ready.
