Raptors
The Raptors will be without forward RJ Barrett for at least another week after he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his sprained right knee, the team announced.
Barrett was injured on November 23 when he landed awkwardly after a dunk and has now missed eight games. He will sit out two more before being reevaluated.
Barrett is averaging 19.4 points, his lowest output since 2021, but has been efficient, shooting a career-best 50.6 percent from the field.
Toronto has dropped five of six heading into Tuesday’s NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup against New York. A win would send the Raptors to Saturday’s semifinals. A loss would push them into a consolation game against the Miami-Orlando loser.
Hawks
Hawks two-way forward Jacob Toppin will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He suffered the injury in a November 29 G League game with College Park.
Toppin, 25, has appeared in just 31 NBA games across three seasons but has been a strong G League contributor, averaging 18.0 points and 10.4 rebounds this fall.
With his two-way contract set to become guaranteed on January 7, Atlanta may opt to waive him. His brother, Pacers forward Obi Toppin, is also out long-term following October foot surgery.
Heat
Heat guard Terry Rozier pleaded not guilty Monday to two federal charges tied to alleged illegal sports betting, per multiple reports.
Prosecutors claim Rozier tipped off an associate he planned to remove himself from a March 2023 Hornets game, information that was allegedly sold to bettors for roughly $100,000.
Rozier was released on $3 million bond secured by his Florida home. He remains on unpaid leave, with part of his salary currently non-guaranteed.
Miami is still awaiting clarity from the league on whether the contract can be moved or waived before it locks in next month.
Investigators have been examining a game in which heavy, fast-paced underwagers on Rozier’s props were placed shortly before tipoff. He exited after nine minutes due to injury, resulting in all unders cashing.
