James Borrego, JJ Redick May Be Among Pistons Coaching Candidates

Well, we’ve heard plenty about James Borrego and JJ Redick this NBA offseason. Borrego has been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, and Redick to the Lakers.

Now we may be adding the Detroit Pistons to that list for each.

Per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Borrego and Redick are two possibilities in Detroit, which fired Monty Williams on Wednesday after one year on the job.

Borrego is currently an assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans — the team from which new Pistons head of basketball Trajan Langdon emerged.

Redick, 39, recently retired as a player and has been working with ESPN as an NBA analyst. He and Langdon both played college ball at Duke.

“(Pistons vice chairman) Arn Tellem is also a fan of Redick, for what it’s worth,” Fischer wrote.

So both Borrego and Langdon have the connections. But it is believed that Redick may be the frontrunner in LA, and Borrego the leader in the clubhouse with the Cavs.

Hoops Wire sources said the Pistons could also look to try cheaper options, such as a respected assistant, given that they’re now paying Williams $65 million not to coach the team.

Either way, the search is underway and Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement that he is aiming high.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to bring a championship-caliber team to Detroit,” Gores said. “We will be diligent and swift in our search for a new head coach to lead our exciting young core of players and will continue our vision towards building a best-in-class front office that will help us achieve sustainable success.”
