The tension between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat has reached a boiling point, with a trade ahead of the NBA deadline increasingly looking inevitable.
As ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed on First Take, the situation between the star player and the team has seemingly deteriorated to the point of no return. Then again, this is the NBA, so you just never know.
“There’s definitely a likelihood of (a trade),” Charania said, via RealGM. “A lot of it is because of where this is at right now. It’s at an untenable state. It’s really at a point of no return between these two sides.”
While the Heat have yet to demonstrate any real urgency to trade Butler, the cracks in their relationship are evident. Charania outlined that, while the initial issue began with Butler’s lack of a contract extension, it has now morphed into something far deeper.
“From my understanding, even if the Heat were to offer him an extension right now, that’s not something he wants to do,” Charania said. “That’s not something he would do.”
The final straw, Charania explained, came after the Heat’s victory over the New Orleans Pelicans last Wednesday. In the 24 hours following the win, there were reports that the Heat implied Butler wasn’t playing to his fullest potential, a comment that didn’t sit well with the star.
“What we saw transfer last in the postgame was essentially his reaction to that,” Charania noted, hinting at the growing frustration Butler felt in response to the organization’s criticism.
The tension between Butler and the Heat isn’t new, though. Charania pointed out that Butler and Heat president Pat Riley once had a strong working relationship, with Butler even urging the team to improve their roster over the past few offseasons.
However, the inability to land big-name players like Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, and Kyrie Irving when they became available has created significant frustration for the star.
“They’ve been unable to acquire those guys,” Charania said, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes frustration that has been simmering for months.
