Kings Signing Former No. 1 Overall Draft Pick Markelle Fultz

Free agent guard Markelle Fultz has agreed to a new contract with the Sacramento Kings, his agent Raymond Brothers of I AM Sports & Entertainment confirmed to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.Markelle Fultz, NBA, Kings, Magic

The deal will keep Fultz with the Kings through the remainder of the 2024/25 season, although the exact terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Fultz’s arrival comes after Sacramento dealt point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a three-team trade. The move left the Kings with a gap in their backcourt, and Fultz will help provide much-needed depth at the position.

The trade also saw the Kings acquire two-time All-Star Zach LaVine and several future draft picks, reshaping their roster heading into the final stretch of the season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves were reportedly also interested in adding Fultz, according to Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News. However, Fultz ultimately chose the Kings as his next destination after a challenging 2024 offseason that saw him enter unrestricted free agency.

Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, has faced numerous obstacles in his career, including significant injuries. He tore his left ACL in 2021 and struggled with recurring knee issues in 2023.

Despite these setbacks, Fultz remains a talented guard with the potential to contribute. In 2023-24, he played 43 games for the Orlando Magic, averaging 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.

Fultz shared his excitement about the new opportunity, tweeting “[God’s] Plan,” marking a new chapter in his ongoing NBA journey.
