According to NBA insider Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal, Anthony Davis‘ habit of starting his offseason training late in the summer is seen as a factor in his body breaking down during the regular season.
Davis is one of the best players in the NBA when he’s healthy, but he’s never played more than 76 games in a season.
“Sources from previous stops in Davis’ career recall complaints from some close to the star forward that he tended to start his offseason program within a month of training camp, which was seen as a factor in his body breaking down during the season,” Afseth wrote. “It’s also common to hear from people from Davis’ previous career stops that an early career lack of interest in resistance work has played a role in various lower-body injuries.”
The Dallas Mavericks acquired Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Davis only appeared in nine regular-season games with the Mavericks after the Luka Doncic trade because of an adductor injury.
A future Hall of Famer, Davis averaged 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 0.6 steals and 2.2 blocks with the Mavericks, who missed the playoffs this year after reaching the NBA Finals last year with Doncic.
“The reality is that Davis’ adductor strain is a connected injury to his groin,” Afseth wrote. “It was common to see him grabbing at that area during games, even after returning at a time when many within the organization felt it was best to shut it down due to a limited ceiling amid Kyrie Irving’s torn ACL. Despite numerous periodic attempts by DallasHoopsJournal.com to contact Davis’ representation to confirm whether surgery has been ruled out, requests for comment were ignored.”
Davis is 32 years old. He will make $54,126,380 next season and $58,456,490 in 2026-27.
Davis has a player option worth $62,786,601 for the 2027-28 season. The Chicago native has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He has career averages of 24.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks.
