The Phoenix Suns are taking steps toward making a deal for Jimmy Butler, but it will likely require the involvement of multiple NBA teams to make it happen, according to a person with knowledge of the ongoing discussions.
This is the beginning of a process that sends Butler to Phoenix, a source told Jeff Zilgitt of USA TODAY. The Suns likely would sign him to a longer deal when he becomes a free agent this summer.
Butler has expressed his desire to play in Phoenix, and the Suns have the draft capital necessary to facilitate a trade, especially if they can move Bradley Beal. However, Beal’s no-trade clause is a significant roadblock.
If Beal waives the clause, Phoenix could move forward with a deal that involves taking on Beal’s remaining two years and $110.7 million left on his contract after this season. Despite the challenge, the Suns would have the assets to make the trade appealing to other teams.
Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz are set to receive Phoenix’s 2031 first-round pick in the deal, which could turn into a valuable lottery selection down the line. The Jazz are currently in a strong position, holding 11 first-round picks over the next seven years, which gives them flexibility as they continue to build for the future.
As the trade talks continue to evolve, the Suns’ path to landing Butler may involve creative maneuvers with additional teams, but with the right moves, Phoenix could be poised to land the All-Star wing, potentially reshaping their roster and championship aspirations.

I’m not a Beal fan but I like when guys’ basketball talent is maximized.
If he can end up on a Doc Rivers squad, we can finally see how bad those old “Ray Allen” comparisons were. But on the upside see him find a home in a place he’d probably fit best, enjoy some success, and contribute to a team where he his talents pay off.
Plus the Bucks kind of have a gap in that spot, so I think it would help them look better overall.
