NBA stretch deadline arrives with Cavs, Timberwolves among teams to watch

The NBA has another deadline Saturday. This one doesn’t involve trades, free agents or anything else remotely glamorous.

But it could determine what happens with Cam Whitmore and a few other recognizable names around the league.

As Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors explained, Saturday is the final day teams can waive a player and stretch his 2026-27 salary across multiple seasons.

The important part: Players have to clear waivers by Aug. 31. So teams must make the move by Saturday.

That matters in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers still need to create enough room beneath the first apron to officially complete James Harden‘s reported three-year, $97 million contract.

Whitmore remains the obvious name to watch.

The Cavs acquired him in the Peyton Watson trade, but his expiring $5.5 million salary has made him a potential waive-and-stretch candidate. They’ve explored trading Whitmore first, which obviously would be preferable to simply releasing a 22-year-old former first-round pick.

But time is running out if the Cavs want the stretch option available.

They’re hardly alone. Minnesota may have to make a similar decision involving Josh Green after agreeing to a deal with Jonathan Kuminga. New Orleans could face its own squeeze after signing Bennedict Mathurin, with Jordan Hawkins mentioned as a potential candidate.

Sacramento already stretched DeMar DeRozan‘s $10 million partial guarantee, spreading the damage over three seasons and slipping under the luxury-tax line.

That’s essentially the tradeoff here. Save money now, leave a little dead money lying around later.

Sort of the NBA version of putting something on the credit card and deciding Future You can worry about it.

For the Cavs, Future You may be arriving Saturday.
