The Los Angeles Clippers probably aren’t eager to trade Kawhi Leonard.
And given the way Leonard played this past season, it’s easy to see why.
Still, that hasn’t stopped speculation from building around the Clippers’ long-term direction after another disappointing finish.
One recent mock proposal from Bleacher Report suggested a blockbuster scenario in which Leonard would land with the Miami Heat in exchange for a package centered around Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, future draft assets and young talent.
At first glance, it sounds a little wild.
Then you start looking at where the Clippers actually are as a franchise.
Leonard will turn 35 next season and has just one year left on his contract. Meanwhile, Los Angeles already pivoted toward a younger timeline at the trade deadline by acquiring Darius Garland and moving several veteran pieces.
That’s what makes this conversation at least somewhat believable.
Herro, still in his mid-20s, would give the Clippers another offensive creator next to Garland, while the added draft capital could help accelerate a retool around a younger core.
According to the proposal, Miami would also include a future first-round pick, a pick swap and lottery prospect Nate Ament.
Of course, there’s another side to this.
Leonard was phenomenal this season. The two-time Finals MVP averaged nearly 28 points while finally staying relatively healthy for most of the year. Trading a player still performing at that level is the type of move that can absolutely backfire on a front office.
Especially when reports continue linking the Clippers to possible extension talks with Kawhi.
So no, this doesn’t feel imminent.
But in an NBA where aging stars, second-apron concerns and timeline questions are driving more decisions than ever, it’s at least the type of idea teams quietly have to think about.
