Jonathan Kuminga is still looking for a home, so naturally, we have reached the let’s trade half the Western Conference portion of the offseason.
Jackson Caudell and Rohan Raman of Hawks On SI cooked up a three-team sign-and-trade proposal involving the Hawks, Kings and Trail Blazers. And there are some rather large names involved. Under the proposal:
Hawks receive: Jrue Holiday.
Trail Blazers receive: Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, Corey Kispert, Devin Carter, a 2027 first-round pick from Sacramento via San Antonio, a 2029 first-round pick swap with Atlanta and two second-rounders.
Kings receive: Jonathan Kuminga on a proposed three-year, $60 million contract, Buddy Hield, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Yang Hansen, Micah Potter and a 2028 first-round pick from Portland via Orlando.
Yes. That’s a lot. The basic idea would be for Sacramento to lean completely into its rebuild around Darius Acuff Jr., dumping significant long-term salary while taking swings on Kuminga, Sharpe and Henderson.
Portland, meanwhile, would turn some of its crowded collection of guards and wings into Sabonis and Murray. Sabonis could immediately become an offensive hub alongside Ja Morant, while Murray would give the Blazers another two-way forward.
Atlanta’s end is considerably simpler.
The Hawks would essentially turn Kuminga into Holiday, giving them another veteran ball-handler and high-level perimeter defender to go with Lu Dort, Dyson Daniels and Aaron Wiggins. The downside is Holiday’s contract and age, particularly for a team that has positioned itself to have financial flexibility next summer.
Again, this is strictly a hypothetical proposal. There is no indication the Hawks, Kings and Blazers have discussed anything resembling it.
But it’s August. Kuminga remains unsigned. And apparently no trade machine is safe.
