NBA Trade Rumors: Ty Jerome, Darius Garland, Dejounte Murray, Daniel Gafford

Training camps have barely started, but it’s never too early for the NBA trade market to start taking shape.

Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports put together an early look at players who could find their names circulating between now and the February trade deadline. Nothing here should be confused with an imminent deal, but several situations are already worth watching.

Grizzlies

Ty Jerome may be one of the more logical trade candidates in the league if Memphis remains committed to getting younger.

Jerome has two years and about $19 million left on his contract, including a player option, and averaged 19.7 points while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range in 15 games last season. Deveney noted that the 29-year-old doesn’t necessarily fit the Grizzlies’ rebuilding timeline and could bring back future assets.

There’s a catch: Memphis doesn’t exactly have point guards to spare. So Jerome could have plenty of value to the Grizzlies, too.

Clippers

Darius Garland is a considerably bigger name and would require a considerably bigger return.

Deveney identified Garland as perhaps the one Clippers player capable of fetching a package involving two first-round picks as Los Angeles determines its direction following the massive penalties stemming from the Kawhi Leonard-Aspiration investigation.

Garland still has two years and about $87 million remaining on his contract. His injury history could complicate his market, but a 26-year-old former All-Star point guard is going to get some phone calls if the Clippers make him available.

Pelicans

Keep Dejounte Murray’s name somewhere on the board.

The Pelicans guard is coming back from an Achilles injury and has two years and roughly $63 million remaining, including a player option. According to Deveney, teams will want to see how Murray looks once he’s healthy, but he is expected to emerge as a trade candidate closer to the deadline.

That makes sense. There’s little reason for New Orleans to sell low now when a healthy first half could change Murray’s value considerably.

Mavericks

Daniel Gafford could be another veteran whose timeline no longer matches his team’s.

The Mavericks are getting younger, while Gafford turns 28 in October and has three years and approximately $54 million remaining on his contract. Deveney reports that moving the veteran center has been among Dallas’ goals.

Gafford is also useful enough that the Mavericks don’t need to give him away. He’s a proven starting-caliber big man with playoff experience and should have a market among teams looking for help around the rim.

It’s September, so nobody needs to start packing yet.

But these are four names worth remembering once the real trade season arrives.
