NBA Notes: Warriors, Draymond Green, Kings, Ben Simmons, Magic

The Warriors are where Draymond Green wants to finish his career. But leaving Golden State wouldn’t necessarily mean he’s finished playing.

Green, who signed a one-year contract this summer, told Alex Sherman of CNBC that he intends to play beyond this season, even if that means wearing another uniform. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent again next summer.

“I would love to retire a Golden State Warrior. However, I’m also not Steph Curry, right? So I don’t have every luxury that Steph Curry has, and that’s OK,” Green said. “It’s such a rare thing to be on one team your entire career. And if I can accomplish that feat, I would love to.”

Green has been with the Warriors since entering the league in 2012. His preference is clear, though he isn’t treating another contract with Golden State as a condition for continuing his career.

“I would love to play basketball next year,” he said. “If that’s not here, I’m not going to retire.”

The Warriors could have considerable flexibility next summer. Even after extending Stephen Curry and Brandin Podziemski, they project to have significant cap room, giving the front office options as it decides how to build around Curry.

Green said he wouldn’t have any “ill feelings” toward the organization if those plans don’t include him.

“I’m extremely grateful for the journey that I’ve been on here,” he said.

More from around the NBA:

  • Kings: Ben Simmons is expected to remain around the team while recovering from his season-ending Achilles tear, Marc J. Spears of Andscape said during an appearance on ESPN Today. Spears reported that Simmons has received support throughout the organization and said he believes coach Doug Christie was close to naming him a team captain before the injury. That wasn’t an announced decision, but it offers some indication of the impression Simmons had made during camp. His comeback season was cut short by the injury at Sunday’s practice.
  • Magic: Anthony Black says missing Monday’s rookie extension deadline won’t change his approach to the season. “Still trying to help the team win. It’s more important than just me,” Black said, via Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. “So (I’m) looking forward to having a good season and making the most out of this year with my team.” Black is headed toward restricted free agency next summer, but his immediate concern is an ankle injury. He said Tuesday that he’s unsure whether he’ll be available for Wednesday’s opener against the Hawks.
