NCAA clarification clouds Robbie Avila’s potential college return

Robbie Avila’s path back to college basketball may not be as clear as it initially appeared.

The NCAA issued a clarification to its members Sunday regarding the federal court ruling that opened the possibility of additional eligibility for certain athletes.

According to a message shared by CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, the court made clear that eligibility must still be determined under the NCAA’s age-based rule. Players generally must remain within five years of first enrolling in college or turning 19, whichever occurred earlier.

The NCAA added that all other eligibility rules remain in place, including those involving participation in professional basketball. That last part could be important for Avila.

The former Saint Louis center agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Lakers after going undrafted in June. Whether that agreement prevents him from returning to college may depend on his precise contractual status and how the NCAA applies its professional-participation rules.

In other words, the court ruling was not necessarily a blanket fifth year for everyone.

Avila is reportedly exploring his options ahead of a special transfer portal window scheduled for Aug. 3-10. The 6-foot-10 big man averaged 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season while earning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors.

He now has an unusual decision to make, assuming the NCAA determines he still has one.

The Lakers offer a possible path into the NBA. Another college season could offer more playing time, increased exposure and perhaps considerable name, image and likeness compensation.

First, though, Avila and the NCAA need to establish whether returning to college is actually allowed.
