Nets Have Yet To Hold Meaningful Talks With Cam Thomas

The Brooklyn Nets and restricted free agent guard Cam Thomas still seem far apart on a contract agreement, and we’re nearly a month into free agency.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Nets “have yet to even significantly engage” in potential negotiations with Thomas. Then again, Thomas doesn’t appear to be drawing much interest from anywhere.

“The Nets appear content on slow-rolling the rest of their offseason accounting,” Fischer wrote. “They have roughly $24 million available to absorb additional salary in trades that could generate more incoming draft capital while Thomas’ cap hold ($12.1 million) remains on their books.”

Sources around the NBA have told Hoops Wire they expect Thomas to remain in Brooklyn. How it comes about, and whether there ends up being any friction, is anyone’s guess.

Fischer reported earlier this month that there isn’t a market for Thomas. That’s a bit surprising, given that he’s an underrated bucket-getter when healthy.

“Thomas, for his part, faces a similar predicament to what confronts other prominent restricted free agents,” Fischer wrote. “Like Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga, Chicago’s Josh Giddey and Philadelphia’s Quentin Grimes, there isn’t much Thomas can do to force the Nets’ hand without bidders in the marketplace that possess cap space of their own.”

Thomas, 23, played in only 25 games for the Nets last season. He averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 43.8% from the field, 34.9% from beyond the arc and 88.1% from the free-throw line.

He carries career averages of 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists with the Nets. He was the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
