The Nets have officially moved on from Cam Thomas.

Brooklyn waived the fifth-year guard to complete its acquisition of Josh Minott, confirming what had been trending all day. After Thomas wasn’t dealt at the deadline, the next step came quickly.

The signs were there. Thomas didn’t travel with the team to Orlando and was listed out for personal reasons, fueling the belief that a split was imminent. Contractually, this had been tricky for months.

After signing his qualifying offer last summer, Thomas held a de facto no-trade clause that limited Brooklyn’s options. The Cavaliers and Bucks were mentioned as possibilities, but nothing materialized.

This outcome was always on the table. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, Thomas and his camp preferred a release if a trade didn’t happen, allowing him to choose his next situation. And he sounds ready.

“Super excited ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” Thomas told Marc J. Spears of Andscape.

Thomas has proven he can score, but injuries limited him to 24 games this season and 25 last year. Once he clears waivers, he’ll have a chance to reset somewhere new.
