For the most part, things are going well for the new-look Clippers, who traded for star guard James Harden earlier this season, adding to a dynamic lineup that features forwards Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and others.
After a rocky start immediately after the Harden deal with the 76ers, the Clippers (22-13) eventually went on to win nine straight and have won 14 of 17 overall.
They currently sit in first in the Pacific Division and have the third-best record in all the West. But as George said on his Podcast P, there is still some work to be done.
“We’ll have moments of going up big, and not being able to put teams away,” he said. “You talk about the teams that have won it and teams that are serious contenders when they go up big, it’s over. Like damn, the team knows it, this game’s over it, they lost.
But the Clippers are still working on that element of being a true contender, George suggested.
“We give teams that life that they can come back and make it a game again,” he said on the podcast, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment. “I think saw a great version of that … in New Orleans. We went up big, we solidified that … we shut the door on the game, that game’s over with.”
In other words, the Clippers don’t want to just build leads, they want to make them even bigger.
Either way, there’s no doubt that the play of George, Leonard, Harden and the rest have put the rest of the NBA on notice. Now all they need to do is start finishing the job more convincingly. At least, that seems to be the way George views it.
