The Pelicans signed Johnny O’Neil. Then they waived him. No, they didn’t change their minds that quickly.
The transactions were designed to send the former Santa Clara big man back to New Orleans’ G League affiliate, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.
The Pelicans made the same moves last September. This year’s Exhibit 10 contract makes O’Neil eligible for a bonus worth up to $91,000 if he spends at least 60 days with the Laketown Squadron, who control his returning rights.
O’Neil appeared in 45 G League games last season, averaging 9.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 blocks while shooting 36.7 percent on threes.
So this wasn’t the world’s shortest failed audition. It was roster paperwork with a purpose.
O’Neil gets another season to develop and a chance to earn additional money. The Pelicans keep a prospect they already know in their system.
